Lab 1: Follow a packet

NET-100 · Lesson 01 · Intro to Networking: OSI and TCP/IP. Run four commands in the practice terminal below and decide which OSI layer each one shows. Everything happens on this page, so you do not need your own terminal. The terminal is a simulator with a limited command set, and your addresses are made up and change each time you reload the page. Goal: 15 minutes.

Up and down arrows recall earlier commands.

Your steps

  1. Find your addresses. Run in the terminal. Write down the three values you find.
  2. Ping your gateway. Run using the gateway from step 1 (replace the placeholder). Note the time in ms.
  3. Trace the path. Run . Count the hops. The first one should be your gateway.
  4. Watch a web request. Run curl -v https://example.com. Find the lines that show the connection, the TLS handshake and the request (a line starting with > GET).

Think about it

1. Your ping worked but a web page will not load. Which layers can you rule out?

2. Which step showed a layer 2 address?
